Mental Health First Aid Training

Please join us to become certified in Mental Health First Aid Youth. This two-day course, a program of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, builds on participants’ existing skills to increase comfort and confidence in working with students and youth (ages 12-24) experiencing mental health problems, such as, depression, anxiety, deliberate self-harm and/or psychosis. Mental health problems often first develop during adolescence or early adulthood, with half of all mental health problems beginning by age 14, and 75 per cent beginning by age 24. Learn to spot the signs and symptoms of potential common mental health problems and how to respond with the five basic actions of mental health first aid. Participants will learn and practice the principles and basic skills of Mental Health First Aid Youth. The following mental health problems are covered: 

· Depression and bipolar disorder 
· Anxiety disorders 
· Deliberate self-injury 
· Eating disorders 
· Psychosis 
· Substance use disorder 

In addition, the mental health first aid for the following crisis situations is covered: 

· Suicidal behaviour 
· Overdoses Panic attacks 
· Acute stress reactions to traumatic events 
· Psychotic episodes

The dates available for this two-day training session are: 

· February 3 & 4 (MAIN BROCK CAMPUS - Saturday & Sunday, 2018)
· March 3 & 4 (HAMILTON CAMPUS - Saturday & Sunday, 2018)

Students from either campus may attend either training date.

The sessions run from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on both days. It is mandatory for each participant to be present for the entire session in order to receive certification.

Ticket Details: 

  1. Tickets are reserved exclusively for Golden Key members until January 13th, then tickets will be available to any general student member at Brock University or McMaster at the early bird rate.
  2. Early bird tickets are available for general students from January 13th until January 27th.
  3. On January 27th, ticket prices will increase to $110 for all groups.
  4. Tickets are non-refundable. Spots cannot be traded or given to other persons.
